Name: El Ezba project by Hand Over
Type: Social Housing
Area: 144m2
Location: Ezbet-abu-Qarn, old cairo, Egypt
Year: 2016
Project Overview
Above all, the idea of the project came about when Hand Over noticed the unsafe conditions of the house. To clarify, the project was a house that hosted two families of eight members overall. Its spaces were not used wisely and it was very dangerous for the families to continue living in due because of its terrible state. Hand Over team had several discussions with the families to know their exact requirements and needs to fulfill them in the new design. So, after gathering the information and listing the conditions of the house, the designers decided to demolish the existing house and freshly create an appropriate house for both families to live in as the old one could be restored by any means.
Project Design
Hand over team introduced the idea of the rammed earth technique to the families. They showed them some photos of similar buildings so that they could fully understand this building technique and confirm using in their house. After their confirmation, the designers started with the space distribution. To illustrate, they tried to make use of the space as much as possible to accommodate the needs of the two families. So, they designed two houses, each has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and a kitchen. In addition to a private entrance for every house with its own access to the roof. Hand Over designers were also keen in providing good lighting and ventilation to the houses so they created a court connecting both houses.
