Here are some highlights spotted throughout the Salone Del Mobile
Versace
Versace is teaming up with New York interior designer Sasha Bikoff and L.A.-based artist Andy Dixon to create what is sure to be an outrageously vibrant exhibit at Versace’s Milan showroom. Bikoff took inspiration from Versace’s fall-winter 1994 show photographed by Richard Avedon, and Dixon will be showing a hand-painted nine-by-seven-foot painted Versace shirt from one of his recent shows in New York. The installation is on display together with the new Versace home collection from April 10th to 14th from 5:00- 8:00 PM in via Gesù 12.
COS Conifera
COS partnered with architect Arthur Mamou-Mani and his team to create Conifera. The brand used renewable resources to create an installation made from fully compostable 3D-printed bioplastic bricks. The installation marks COS’s eighth consecutive installation during Salone del Mobile and its first collaboration with Mamou-Mani.
Conifera is open at Palazzo Isimbardi, Corso Monforte 35, 20122 Milan, a historic building dating from the 16th century.
Loewe Baskets
Presenting an exhibition of basketry, hand quilting, and calligraphy for the fifth project at the annual Salone del Mobile. After four appearances at the furniture fair, master weavers from around the world were tasked to create baskets out of leather, upending their traditional ways of working. But also preserving their signature style and the influence of their own cultures. The exhibition is at Via Montenapoleone 21, Milan.
Knoll celebrates Bauhaus
Salone wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the legendary German art school known for combining crafts with fine art. Knoll teamed with the architect Rem Koolhaas’s OMA to curate an exhibition with Domitilla Dardi that presented the Bauhaus’s greatest hits. From the Bauhaus student and teacher Marcel Breuer’s iconic Wassily chair to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s legendary Barcelona chair., in the showroom at Piazza Bertarelli during the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Dior
Milan based Dimore Studio created a line of 14 exclusive objects for Dior inspired by the French fashion house. That includes the cannage pattern on vases and Frames that incorporate Dior’s signature. The pieces are made with metals like gold, silver, bronze and brushed or chrome steel, occasionally combined with Plexiglas or woven rattan.
The Circular Garden
The recyclable installation ‘the Circular Garden’ by Architect Carlo Ratti. The architectural structure by mushrooms at Orto Botanico di Brera. The circular garden engages with mycelium at the architectural scale — with a series of 60 4 meter high arches made scattered around the botanical garden.
Bulgari
Bulgari is displaying two installations exploring the connection between design, science, and art. In order to celebrate its second year exhibiting at Milan Design Week. Argentinian artist, Tomás Saraceno created the first structure. Bulgari invited Saraceno to draw inspiration from the meteoric origins of gold, with his resulting “cosmic web” using constellations of spider webs to create floating galaxies. Bulgari’s second installation in the surrounding gardens shows the evolution of B.zero1; to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic Bulgari ring.
Focus on Leonardo da Vinci
On the occasion of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death. The Salone opens the way to a vast array of national events. In particular, the S-project is home to an immersive installation, located at pavilion no. 24, called DE-SIGNO to Leonardo. It celebrates the legacy that he left to the culture of design and savoir-faire; a powerful rendition of the story of the Renaissance genius, and his relationship with contemporary Italian design.
Breeze of light
Daikin Industries, Ltd., in collaboration with the design studio Nendo led by Oki Sato, are presenting an exhibit. This installation evokes the sensation of a comfortable breeze by the movement of light and shadows, not actual air. A virtual flower garden is illuminated using 115 individually-controlled spotlights directing light on 17,000 flower-shaped polarizing films. Changes in shadow intensity of the flowers produce the effect of a breeze passing through the garden.
